Dry slope opens up after revamp

The largest dry ski slope in Europe reopened last fall after the addition of a 200 metre trail and range of improvements estimated to cost more than £600,000 ($ 1.1 Million USD).

The Midlothian Snowsports Centre at Hillend was at saved from closing only two years ago after the Midlothian Council said it could no longer afford to run it but now has world class slopes and facilities.

To save the now world class facility from closing, Sportscotland, the national agency for sport, and the Scottish government stepped in with £1m ($1.8-million USD) of funding. The Snowsports Centre was also the focus of an online petition to save it from closing with around 27000 people signing up.

The large investment in the centre includes 200 metres of new ski slope, a longer nursery section and new lifts making it one of the best facilities in the UK.

The centre, first established in 1973 but recently brought under new ownership, is located on a 12 acre site. the outskirts of the city of Gloucester on the edge of Cotswolds.

Helmet cams a possibility for World Champs

(SkiRacing.com) - With television coverage of ski racing seemingly fading away in the US, the plan for broadcasting the Schladming World Championships Feb. 5-17 will include 50 hours of air time created from more than 100 cameras, including what the Austrian network ORF if calling the “Flying Camera,” suspended over the course and capable of keeping up with moving targets moving 140kph. But perhaps the most exciting angles will come from what venerable British journalist Nic Fellows calls “A crashing little gizmo,” a camera, Continue reading 'Helmet cams a possibility for World Champs' Print This Post Print This Post

Ten more years for Vonn? Head thinks so.

(skiracing.com) - Thirty-six percent of the ski racing stars Head introduced at its pre-season press conference at Solden, Austria Thursday (Oct. 25), were Americans. Wild Mountain in Minnesota has won bragging rights as the first ski area to open for the 2012-13 ski season in North America.

The small ski area, which has a 91m vertical and a top lift height of 339m, but operates four quad chairlifts, opened for snowsports on Sunday, October 7th.

The area beat near year-round US ski area Timberline Lodge which closed in September and had planned to re-open on October 5th, but postponed to October 12th, as well as Loveland in Colorado, one of the world’s highest ski areas at 3871m, which has begun snowmaking but is yet to open.
