Description

One of Italy’s most famous resorts, with a surprisingly low number of foreign visitors. It is a very pleasant town with excellent shopping and après ski. The slopes above are varied, extensive and mostly tree-lined.

Review

Madonna di Campiglio is one of the world’s classic ski centres and one of Italy’s most famous ranking with Cortina, Courmayeur and San Martino. Considering its long history in winter sports it has the benefit of an extensive and hugely enjoyable ski area with access lifts coming right down in to the town – both unusual assets compared to many of the other famous ski resorts of long standing. The resort’s altitude gives it better snowsure conditions than many traditional winter sports centres.

Recent investment has meant that almost all the key trails are served by modern lifts, and supported by snow making. As well as the lift-linked terrain joined to two other resorts, a further four are included in the area pass bringing a total of 300km (187 miles) of trails served by 100 lifts, less than a third of those surface tows – a very high percentage of chairs and cabin lifts by Europoean standards.

Madonna di Campiglio is a very chic resort staging the kind of grand balls and polo-on-ice tournaments for which St Moritz is famous. It feels good to be there because the town is pleasant to be in and the surrounding scenery of the Rendena Valley with pink Dolomitic rock above, ascending in sheer cliffs and precipices above the forest is spectacular and beautiful.

The area has a long history, but had been in a period of decline for around 150 years when skiing first began here in the 1930s, the resort really taking off by the ’50s. Most of the local population are now employed in the tourism industry. Unusually for a top European resort the vast majority of Madonna’s clientele are domestic – Italians.

Glacier skiing is in full summer swing in Italy once again.

Looking to cool off in Italy this summer? Your are just in luck, following the re-opening of the country’s third glacier, Val Senales this past week.  It joins Passo Stelvio and the Presena glacier above Passo Tonale, which had one red and one black run open at the weekend but it likely to close in the near future.  However, Cervinia will re-open a week on Saturday for summer skiing and boarding keeping the Italian choices up at three.

Description

Renowned for its lively atmosphere (although now quieter than it used to be) and high-value skiing, Sauze d’Oulx is also at one end of the rather tenuously linked Milky Way Circuit. Conditions permitting it is possible to ski all the way to Montgenèvre, France. Sauze d’Oulx claims to be the birthplace of Italian skiing, dating back to 1899.

Review

Sauze d’Oulx, pronounced “Sow-zee-doo” was one of the most successful Italian ski resorts on the 1970s and ’80s, expanding rapidly. Located on a high sunny ‘balcony’ in the Susa Valley, the resort is surrounded by larch forest above. The trails cut down through this natural amphitheatre have an excellent snow record. Its success resulted from its large and varied ski area, linked to Sestrière, its lively night life and reasonable prices. The resulting growth has led to the construction of a large number of rectangular concrete apartment blocks, mirroring its French partner, Montgènevre, now lift-linked to Sauze at the other end of the long Milky Way circuit.

Although Sauze still has a delightful ancient heart of stone buildings, narrow streets and a cobbled square with water fountain, as well as locals prepared to dress in traditional attire for ancient festivals, these are all somewhat swamped by the newer developments all around. In recent years Sauze d’Oulx has matured to some extent, and although the resort is still one of the liveliest ski centres in the world, the occasionally unpleasant ‘rowdy’ element has moved on. It remains a very popular destination none the less, with most of the major international tour operators including it in their resort lists.

Skiing has been popular here for over a century and world champions like Piero Gros, a gold medalist of the 1976 Olympics, have been based here. Skiing first began on the local slopes at the end of the nineteenth century when a Swiss engineer, Adolfo Kind, taught skiing to locals and guests using wooden boards strapped to the feet.

Description

At 1800 m above sea level and higher, Mount Baldo is normally covered with snow from Christmas to the end of March and it hosts a lively skiing season. For years, there has been a set of lifts, including: the Prà Alpesina chairlift (1430 – 1830 m), which can be reached either from the cableway – one of three in the world that has rotating cabins – at Malcesine or by car, from the Ala – Avio exit of the Brennero motorway, the La Colma ski lift, Pozza della Stella, Falco and so on.

This serves two slopes – one red and one black – which regularly host Italian Winter Sports Association competitions that are also organised by the local ski club as well as being of the same level as other more famous European Cup pistes. There are other easier slopes and nursery slopes available to families for the enjoyment of mothers with their children and “calmer” skiers.
