Description

Situated just off the North/South highway on Jalan Baru, Butterworth in Malaysia, the Snowland indoor snow facility, on level 4 of the Megamal, Pinang, offers a 210ft ski run ideal for tobogan, snowboard and snowtube but is a bit short for any serious skiing. There is a curved, shorter, run on site and a snow play space for children, all of which gives a total terrain area of 25,000 square feet, served by six snowmaking jets. The tops of both slopes are reached by a series of stairways. Megamall Snowland is the third and latest indoor snow facility in Malaysia created by refrigeration experts Wong Brothers – whose logo should not be confused with ntertainments giants, Warner Brothers. The total terrain which extends to 1600 square metres also includes a snow play area. Small ski jumps are sometimes created for added fun. Some jumps and ramps are included and the terrain is ideal for a some family fun and excitement at -5 degrees celsius while outside the temperature of tropical Malaysia can reach 34 degrees Celcius. Other facilities at Snowland include secure lockers, ski and snowboard hire, large changing rooms and a hot/cold drinks machine! Wong Brothers previous projects involving indoor snow date back to the origins of the technology and include the four season Environmental Controlled Chamber in Shah Alam in 1990. Winter snow is created there between July and September so that temperate plants can be grown between July and September. The second snow centre built in 1994 is the snow house at Mines Wonderland, 5km (3 miles) south of Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur. There are no skiing facilities at that centre either. It does however extend to 1000 square metres and gives locals the opportunity to experience a snowy winter in a tropical climate. There is a permanent ice carving display, ice slide and snowflake falling area.
