Description
This centre would have been the 50th operational snowdome to be open but the Adelaide Snowdome in Australia closest shortly before it opened, making it still the 49th operational.
The snow hall aims to attract 100,000 locals who are interested in snow sports and has a terrain park, big jumps and “table tops”, to cater for freestyle enthusiasts. Slope gradient varies between 7 and 24%.
Operating temperatures are minus five with a 50cm typical snow base.
Snow Planet has three lifts – two poma tows to the top of the 202m long main slope and a conveyor serving the nursery area.
The 41m wide main slope has a gradient of 30 degrees at the top, easing to nine degrees at the bottom. The section at 30 degrees is the steepest on offer at any indoor snow centre in the world.
In addition, the separate learner slope which is 60m long has a gradient of nine degrees and it’s own small conveyor lift
A maximum of 250 people are allowed on the slope at any one time to prevent overcrowding. The local population in Auckland is 80,000.
The snow is groomed and the temperature in the hall is -5 degrees.
Overall the centre will aims to deliver, “an alpine-themed social experience in a “winter wonderland” atmosphere.” Facilities include a themed restaurant and bar overlooking the slope, gear rental and testing centre; shop; snow sports school and business centre.
